Hubbub and Unilever have released new research revealing the shocking number of pumpkins that go to waste.

Halloween is now the UK’s third biggest commercial holiday after Easter and Christmas.  Over 40% of households now buy a pumpkin at Halloween – with an average of 2 bought per household.

When asked, 4 out of 5 people said they wanted to reduce their food waste, however more than half of them don’t see pumpkin as a food.  Therefore a huge proportion of the pumpkins bought are carved up and then go to waste… in fact, 18,000 tonnes of pumpkin is thrown away each year.

Of the people surveyed, 20% put their pumpkin in the food waste, 19% add to a compost heap, and 25% thrown away in normal waste.  Around 5 million pumpkins end up in landfill each year.

Half of people have never eaten pumpkin, but when they do nearly 75% like it!  This year, Unilever and Hubbub are launching the biggest ever #PumpkinRescue, with over 40 cooking and composting events and festivals taking place across the country.
