2024 Protyre National Asphalt Rally Championship
March 23rd marked the commencement of the 2024 Protyre National Asphalt Rally Championship with the Legend Fires North West Stages Rally, featuring Adrian Spencer in the RED Industries, Adgespeed-backed Subaru Impreza S11 WRC replica. Located in Garstang, Lancashire, the rally spanned approximately 65 miles on closed public roads.
Drama ensued when co-driver Ashley Trimble sustained an ankle injury, compelling a last-minute replacement. Adrian's long-time friend Barry Allman gallantly stepped in, marking their first rally together in 32 years, reigniting a partnership that originated in the early 80s.
The rally posed formidable challenges for Adrian Spencer and Barry Allman, aiming to surpass their 59th seed placement. Despite aspirations for higher standings, setbacks hindered their progress. During the initial loop of 5 stages, they faced delays due to accidents, completing only half of stage 2. Subsequent stages were cancelled, thwarting their rally efforts.
Undeterred, they pressed on to the afternoon loop, encountering both rusty moments and unforeseen punctures. Nevertheless, their confidence surged, culminating in the 28th quickest time on the final stage 10. Ultimately, they secured 46th overall and 6th in class, a testament to their perseverance amidst adversity.
Gratitude abounds for Barry's impromptu assistance, fostering a heartfelt reunion after decades apart. With the Subaru intact and preparations underway, Adrian and the team eagerly anticipate the upcoming Manx Rally in early May, hopeful for Ashley's swift recovery.
